Would this be something similar to our Book Reviews thread but for movies? If so I like this idea. I do not have a movie to review, however. I'll have to start watching some...
I always like to watch a good film, but how do you know they are good? Why don't you share your experiences with us here.
What defines "good"? I don't think it's Hollywood's special effects or a good looking crew, but a good storyline which is acted and filmed in a competent manner. In my opinion, Flight Plan is example of a "bad" film, as the story had more holes in it than a sponge. Until seeing The Constant Gardener I felt that I hadn't watched a good film for a long time. Critics have back me up on this by suggesting that 2005 wasn't a year for great films.
So go ahead, share your experiences - not just with a title, but also a reason why you like a film. Maybe I could suggest no spoilers though?
Edit: I don't know if such a thread already exists. If it does, mods feel free to delete this one.

Yeah, that's my idea. I don't know if there's such a thread already.Originally Posted by Jezebel

I still haven't seen any movies lately but if anyone has seen: The Constant Gardener, Crash, or Brokeback Mountain would they mind posting what they think? There has been so much buzz about these movies that I'm curious but I don't want to waste $5 and two hours on a bad movie.
$5?! You are so lucky. It costs between £5 (Mondays only) and £9 to see a film in London. That's about $9 - $15 at current rates.
I've seen The Constant Gardener. It's OK, but nothing special. Nicely shot, well acted. You wouldn't miss much by waiting for the DVD release.
I've also seen Michael Hanneke's 'Hidden' recently. It's also overhyped. A vague attempt at an allegory of western, Muslim relations. Very flatly shot, very literal in lots of ways.
Best film I've seen at the cinema lately is 'Syriana'.
But I try to want what?
$5.00?! Is that the matinee? Around here it's $9.50!Originally Posted by Jezebel

You lucky bastardsIn Sweden it costs 12$ to go to movies. It's a good thing you can buy DVDs for half the price if you can wait for the release...
I saw Brokeback Mountain a couple of weeks ago. In my opinion, a great movie. Great acting and Ang Lee is truly a brilliant director. I read the novel before I saw the movie and was pleasantly surprised to see that they kept a lot of the lines. Also, there's a certain feeling of sadness when reading the book that they brilliantly captured in the movie. I left the movie with a lump in my throat as I was holding back my tears. I hate cryin' in public...

I haven't read the book yet, but I hope to do so sometime soon. Do you think it's as good as the film?
i saw Constant Gardener (i am a fan of Ralph Fiennes) and i liked it very much. really well done. the music is great and cinematographer did well!Originally Posted by Jezebel
Brokeback Mountain did not impress me that much. maybe, if i were still unhappily in love, i would have cried all the way, but i just missed the sad mood - had to fast the dvd forward in the end - things were getting a bit too dramatic. but the acting was good - i like it when actors do not remain on the level of stupid comedies, but move on to more sophisticated and intersting parts.
Crash was great. reminded me of Magnolia (haven't i said that before?? i am confused, but whatever) and Thandie Newton and Matt Dillon were absolutely great! the stories are so mixed up, yet it seems that it is exactly like in real life.

here tickets cost from $4,4 in the morning to $8,8 in the evening, but we also have a discount cinema, where the movies come after they are shown in the big cinema and the tickets there cost $2, so if you can wait a month or so, you can easily go there![]()
