Nominations are invited for the May 2011 book of the Month. There are no restrictions upon the theme of the book but I would like to suggest we go for something a little older this month, perhaps pre-1900, just for one month.
This is open for discussion, if there is violent indifference to this idea it is open to change. ;)

I think that's a great idea! I will be participating this month, but I will take some time to think about my nomination.
The good thing about the restriction is that everything will be in the public domain, so it should be easy to get, even for free if you like!

Sounds good to me! But, it is beautiful outdoors, and I'm going to hightail it home from work and play outdoors:) Will think later.

I've been thinking about this one too and I've decided to nominate The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (published 1869) because I've wanted to read this one for awhile and if it does get voted in that will give me the incentive to chase it down. I've heard wildly differing opinions of this book and I'd like to make up my own mind about it by reading it.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlett Letter? I've been meaning to read it and just bought a copy a few days ago.

How about The Oedipus Cycle by Sophocles? I've only ever read Antigone, but it should be interesting to peruse the rest.

Great suggestions! I'm looking forward to it now because I've not read either of those. Let's give Margaine and Winifred a few more days to wear their thinking caps (or anybody else who would like to make a nomination) and then we'll go to a vote.

well, I think I will nominate Far from the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy. Ever since I watched most of the movie Tamara Drewe and found out Hardy's novel was the basis for it, I have been curious about it.
I read The Scarlet Letter, but in high school. I'd be curious to see how I react to it now. I've read 2/3 Oedipus cycle plays. Wouldn't mind a refresher of those, and plus I've never read all three in a row. Would be interesting.

Should we consider Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice? That is, if it hasn't been done before.

Rules are one nomination per member, Jeremy, so unless you are going to swap The Scarlet Letter for P&P (which I personally hope you are not going to do but it's up to you) you can't nominate P&P too.
We'll give this thread one more day then we will go forward to voting.

I was wondering about that too. I'll keep The Scarlet Letter then.

This month, there are so many good suggestions that I'm already going to have a hard enough time deciding how to vote!! Ready to move on to voting whenever!

Okay, I'm off to post a voting thread...now!
Did you feel the wind as I left this thread to rise like a phoenix in another one?
