My only familiarity with the time period stems from an undergraduate paper that I wrote contrasting Dickens and Eliot's feminist approaches to aiding women in need. Dickens preferred to train prostitutes to be home makers and Eliot preferred training them for practical work, and teaching in the areas of literacy I believe, but I could be remembering that all wrong. It's been ages.

Dissertations are very specific, I havn't studied in detail that topic, but I would be interested to read your dissertation and I don't think I can give you any bigger compliment that that!

If it were I who was going to write such a paper I would delve into the private lives of those you mentioned and find out what it was, parents, schooling, tradition, each of their own personal delving into the reason and origin of life, that sustained each. That would be a pivotal point of starting out for me.
