so i've been reading The Brothers Karamazov, and i was intrigued by the somewhat famous statement made by Smerdyakov, "Without God, virtue is meaningless." I'm just wondering...if without a preset moral guideline, without a god and religious doctrine, is virtue still worthwhile to the individual? or is it only worthwhile to society as a whole because of the good done? and if society as a whole has none of the aforementioned moral guidelines &c. should anarchy be allowed to exist?
