Should registration be required in order to post replies? Take the poll above.

I vote "yes." Other wise there's really no particular incentive to join. I think that posting a reply as "unregistered" also opens the possibility of, for instance, posting a question, then answering it themselves. Moderators have no way to control this if a user is unregistered, as IP addresses cannot be checked unless a user is registered. Spammers and trolls also are free to post without worrying about IP banning. None of the other boards I belong to now or have belonged to in the past have allowed posting without registering.

Since it was my idea, I vote yes.

It takes only a few seconds, it's free and we do not even require real names (which personally I think we should, but I won't press my luck).

So register now!

Yes I agree. When people post anonymously, it is usually a once of thing and they rarely make valuable contributions to the discussions....

I vote "yes" as well. I also think that people who register should be required to activate their account with an email, or else a person can make a lot of junk accounts with fake email accounts. Maybe this rule has already been established, but if it hasn't, I just wanted to propose the idea and see what you guys think of it.

I agree, also because it's just easier to get to know who is posting when they have a username.

Wow, looks like a shutout right now. 6-0 vote yes. I'm still a little split on this issue...I'll have to think about it a little more before casting a vote. If I vote no, I hope it counts for a lot. ;)

You're only split on the issue because it would eliminate the oops it was me. :p

Hmmm...I guess that could be part of the reason. But at the same time, requiring people to register in order to post would also secure my legacy as the Sublime Prince of Oopsing. I like to pretend that others are competing with me. :D

I don't mean any offense here, but I do think this poll is a little redundant. Since only people who took the time to register can vote here, the outcome seems obvious.

I voted no. Just because I'm a dissenting argumentative jerk :-).

Ok, changed it to yes. There's no need to allow people to post anonymously and it opens the door to abuse.

The poll is intended to gauge the wishes of contributing users. If there are an unregistered members who are interested enough in the outcome, they are free to vote. The poll reflects the interests of the majority of users, as it should. Registered members are free to vote "no" if they so desire.

What I meant to say was the the forum prevents unregistered "guests" from voting in polls. I know, I've tried it without logging in.

Yes, or you run the risk of getting lots of internet trolls posting any annoying thing - possibly obnoxious. :( I completely understand that there are brilliant genuine possible new members out there, but if they are genuine and really want to be part of the forums then they will join anyway :)
I voted for yes :)

I voted yes. While we haven't had any real problems lately, it could help us in future. As Liz says, it's not like it's anything unusual.

I don't think it will deter anyone from posting, and certainly no-one has come forward to suggest that here yet.

So..........have we reached consensus on this yet?
