Ok, I may have been expressing some of my...enthusiasm for this show Firefly around here, so I just thought I'd see if anyone else has heard of it/seen it/realised how great it is.

Basically, it's a sci-fi western (who would have guessed that'd work so well?) and being a creation of Joss Whedon's (of Buffy and Angel fame) it doesn't take itself too seriously. It focusses on a bunch of renegades aboard the space ship Serenity, relating tales of their adventures. Find out a bit more here: http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/AboutFirefly.

I love the characters, the quirkiness of the script, well, most things about it. It's reached a more mainstream audience because a movie based on the series called Serenity was recently released. I liked that too.

So, I've filled you in on one of my little foibles, anyone else have any thoughts?

I've never heard of the show, although it seems it aired in the USA back in 2002. At any rate I checked the USA Sci-Fi Channel schedule, and it's being shown every Friday at 7PM. Ironically the season finale will be shown this coming Friday, Nov. 4th, but it appears to resume on the 11th, so I'm guessing it'll begin with the first episode then("Serenity - Pt.1"). I'm going to try and watch the first episode.

It'll be an experience, Liz. Let me know what you think. The terrible thing is that it only ran to 14 episodes before getting canned. I'm going to know those 14 episodes very well, very soon :). If you can catch it from the beginning, it may be the beginning of a beautiful thing - or just a greater understanding of my mind...

I trusted you about House, and you were so right...so I'm willing to take a chance on Firefly. I'll let you know what I think.

I missed episode 1! I had the recorder set to tape it , since Mads and I were going out and would't be home by 7. When I got home the Twins and their buddy had set up X-Box on the tv, so the episode never got taped. Grrr.....I'll try again this coming Friday...and if I tape it I'll leave a note on the tv set.

It's a pity I can't keep up with the Firefly episodes anymore...no cable in the dorms!

Well, as there are only 14 episodes (even though us geeks still hold out hope they'll start it again some day) if you miss something you can always catch up somewhere along the line, as they're all repeats.

Keep trying, Liz, an episode of Firefly is certainly an experience, in my opinion.

Oh, I haven't given up yet! On Friday we'll all be at my parent's house celebrating Robert's birthday, so they'll be no one to disturb the video tape here at the house.

A friend of mine has the DVD boxset, and lent it to me in advance of the movie coming out. Wow. Such a well done show, so smart and funny, it's really a terrible shame that it was canceled. Why is it that Fox always takes the greatest shows, totally mismanages them, then cancels them?! (Fans of Arrested Development will sympathize with me on this one).

I'm going to have to get the set...for some reason my VCR didn't tape Friday's episode, so now I've missed the first two.

Don't feel you have to go and spend all that money, Liz, just catch it if you get the chance. But hey, if your heart's set on it, I won't stop you...

Oh yes, I'm a fan of Arrested Develpoment too, another show that only gets shown late at night here, at odd times, odd days, and I love it. What is wrong with these people?

I've just got the DVD set and am on episode two tonight.

I'm watching it backwards since I saw the film Serenity first and one of the main characters dies so it's a bit weird.

I love Josh's style and the sense of humour that has me whooping when all about sit stony faced. I ADORED Buffy. Not sure Mal is a cute as the leads in that but the ship is terrific - '70s pad in space.. :)

Excuse me? Mal not as cute? Watch a few more episodes, I think you'll find he's the cutest of them all...especially in Trash. But enough of that...

I think the design of the show - sets, costumes, even things like language - is really well done. I have criticisms, of course, but it's still all very funky. I've never thought it looked low budget like a lot of critics have said - perhaps we're just too accustomed to over-use of CGI.

I was in Hollywood Video Friday, and I asked the clerk if they had Firefly. since they carry House, M.D., and Sex and the City and Six Feet Under and Queer as Folk. etc.etc. He siad they didn't have it , and the other clerk, who was new, said "Oh no..why not? I love that show! Have you seen Serenity?" There are fans out there...I wonder why the show was cancelled.

Are there any fans of the show or movie on here? I was just rewatching the series this weekend, I have it on dvd and I really think it was just brilliant, cheesy at times, yes but that doesn't always have to be a bad thing. :p

As you can see, Idril, I merged your thread with the existing Firefly thread...you may gather I am just a little obsessed with it. Have you a favourite episode? Mine changes all the time, but I always keep going back to "Shindig".

I looked for an existing thread but I couldn't find one, I guess I just didn't look far enough back. As far as my favorite episode, that really is a hard one, every show had it's bright points but I suppose if I was forced, I would have to pick "Ariel", I thought it was very well thought out, I liked seeing Simon in control for a change and dynamics between he and Jayne and Mal are always so interesting.

My hope is that they may choose to do another movie, I don't think it did that well in the theaters but my understanding is that it's done well on dvd so maybe they'll decide to go back and do the Star Trek thing and just make movies...although it won't be quite the same without Wash. A friend of mine met Alan Tudyk at some collectormania thing and got me an autographed picture of him. It was a very sweet gesture on her part considering she has a heart of stone and didn't even seem to care that the man...wait...are we giving out spoilers on this thread?

hey! I'm glad to know that there are other Firefly fans on here! I'm a big fan. :)

I think my favorite episodes are "War Stories" "Shindig" (cause I'm a girly girl and I like all the costumes - just like Kaylee!) and of course "Objects in Space"

I love the movie too of course. But sometimes it's a little to stressful for me too watch (no spoilers here . . . I don't see any spoilers . . . ;) )

War Stories was good, a little hard to watch but very well done. Shindig was good too, that dress Kaylee wore was awesomely bad.

I think I already mentioned "Shindig" is my favourite; I think it's the combination of some awesome costuming, great dialogue and one of those episodes where the layering of storylines - episodical, personal, and serial - is so dense and spot on I love it. And that dress is hideous!

And of course, no spoilers, but I do get very upset watching the movie...to think, there are certain questions that will never be answered, as well.

On the topic of such things, I have heard rumours that there might be more movies...but I don't put any stock in them.

Yeah? I used to be up on all the latest Joss Whedon/Firefly/Serenity gossip but not so much lately. I was involved with a local Browncoat group but I haven't hung out with them for a while. So I don't know what's going on anymore.

I have this little fantasy that maybe Zoe was pregnant but didn't know it by the end of the movie, it makes the ending a little easier to take. And the reason why I have this little daydream is because I was watching the series and remember on one of the last episodes, Zoe and Wash were talking about having a baby? It's silly, I know but it's still comforting to me. :embarrass

I saw the movie before I had seen the series and I loved it anyway so it's not absolutely necessary...however I did get a lot more out of it the second time I watched it, after having gone through the series, everything had a lot more significance.

I watched the 2-hour pilot episode, Serenity, last night. I was pleasantly suprised! It reminds me of an updated and quirky Star Trek (of which I'm a fan). I love the fact that the crew are not cookie-cutter heroes, what with their outlaw activities and unique characters. I especialy like Inara, Kaylee and Mal, and I suspect there's more than just a mean temper to Jayne Cobb. I'm pretty concerned about those Reavers, though..methinks we haven't seen the last of them! :o

I must preface this post by saying I am appealing to the creativity of my fellow Firefly fans...I need your help!

For my fellow FF addict's birthday, I am making her a charm bracelet where each of the charms represents a character. So far I have succeeded in obtaining:

Mal - dogtags
Book - cross
Jayne - pink gun (aka Vera)
Inara - Cloisonne circle
Wash - leaf
Kaylee - strawberry
Zoe - brown cord with bead
River - twig/branch

But herein lies my difficulty - I can't find anything for Simon. I have searched for something medical (Caduceus, scissors, scalpel/knife, doctor's bag) but have had no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions for an item which could represent him and might be easier to locate?

Have you tried looking in a toy store? There are things such as little doctor's kits, Barbie dolls dressed as Doctor Barbie, complete with miniature doctor bag and instruments...etc.

Wow, I am really impressed Star. That sounds like an awesome present :)

You really couldn't find a Caduceus charm? Searching online it seems like there are a lot. I really can't think of anything non-medical for Simon. I just can't think of any other tangible thing that represents his character, since so much of himself is devoted to his concern and love for River. A tie or a suit or something? I don't think those would make very good charms, though. A book or a journal maybe? ("Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy . . .").

Although maybe you'll be okay given Liz's suggestions. :-)

A few months ago, I started cutting out magazine and catalog images to make a Firefly-ish collage. I looked for images that represented each character in the same way that your charms do. You've inspired me to actually finish the collage.

I haven't looked online for a caduceus, as I usually run in to trouble buying that way as I refuse to have a credit card. Maybe I could have a swing on eBay though, that works more often. I like the idea of the book/journal, which is one I had for the character Book, but couldn't find that one either. The one other idea I had was a pair of sunglasses (ie, the pilot episode when we first meet Simon, he's wearing dark shades).

Well, he's very smart, you could always go with a book or something else that signifies his intelligence. He's also a caregiver, rescuing his sister and protecting her at all cost...a heart maybe? Both for the doctor thing and for the love he has for River?

The heart is a good idea too, although not something I immediately associate with Simon and his reputation of not being very much of a people-person;) Thanks for the help y'all, I'll keep you updated on what I find.

I've just been going through my dvd, watching all the episodes and there were a couple of episodes I had forgotten about. I love Safe mostly just for the scene of River dancing and Our Mrs. Reynolds has to be one of the funniest ones they did. I think my favorite line from that one...and there are many classic lines to choose from is when Mal is defending his kissing Saffron, "She was naked...and articulate!". :p

And of course there's the "Some people juggle geese!" line :)

I'm surprised at how much of that got past the censors. Inara was funny when she was trying to cover up the fact that she kissed Mal, it was nice to see her a little off balance for a change.

right.. well, I am once again rather late for the discussion. :D

But, since Firefly was advised by a friend and since this certain friend's previous advice had been very good, I decided to try it :D (though I think I will not start watching House, M.D.;)).

Anyway, I just watched the pilot episode - Serenity, I mean, which, as Wikipedia tells me, was actually shown last..). So, in another 13 episodes I'll be right with you :D

I did see Serenity movie previously, so I know the characters and some of the plot. However, I've been longing for some good action and humor for quite some time.. Firefly seems to be perfect for it.
