I was just wondering if there is anybody out there who actively keeps a diary? No matter what the purpose?

I think it would be cool to start a diary to write down any thoughts or ideas that might pop into my head. I have thought about starting one for a while now.

I think about starting a diary every day. I have so many thoughts in my head all of the time, it would be good to write them down. But I always think "Would I want anyone to read it if something happens to me?" With that in mind would I be able to freely pour out my feelings on paper? If I were to start a diary I would choose to write in a book, as opposed to into the computer.

I keep a writing journal, which is somewhat different; I carry it with me pretty much most places, and I write whatever occurs to me as interesting. I'd let others read it (I have let them read select passages already) as most of it wouldn't make sense. I don't really see what I'd get from keeping a diary proper, that iw rote in every day about whatever had happened; I'm not into that sort of analysis or intense reflection on what would be intensely mundane.

YA because I always have interesting thoughts at times, and it would be nice to write them down. Also I have thought about writing a book/ short story at some stage so I could write down any ideas which might come to me. And even the random thoughts I write down would help as well. I would also be a bit paranoid about people reading it, but maybe then that person could get a good insight into the workigns of my brain !:p If they could understand it of course... And I also would definitely write it in book form, anything on computer doesnt have the same appeal, theres something intriguing in putting pen to paper and writing down your thoughts. :)

i have never kept a diary properly. last summer i started one, but couldn't last a week. :) the only explanation i have is that i think much faster than i write. so i just talk to myself, express emotions, then they go away and there is no point to write them down..
i have written a couple of short stories, which were a reflection of my thoughts, but had a plot and characters, so it wasn't really a diary-writing.
i just think i wouldn't have the patience for a diary - to write something down every day.. besides, i sometime use lit.forums to express some thoughts.. (but it is a secret.. don't tell anyone..)

I keep a diary, but not a daily diary, so it might be more like something of a jouranl. I've kept them for ages now, on and off. It's basically fun when you go and read back in the future. I stick loads of things in there -not only thoughts, but also poems and book quotes and photos and stuff- so it's really neat.
Concerning the people who might read it, I figure that as long as I don't know that they've read it, I'll be okay. And if they told me they'd read it, I'd be so mad that they had done so without my permission, I should think they should feel more ashamed of themselves for that lack of respect that I would feel for what I write.
Not that it's so highly interesting to anyone bt me, really.
I think everybody writes slower than they think. Sometimes I wish I could be like John Seward (character from Dracula). He kept a recorded diary, so there. Then Mina went and typed it all out for him...

I keep a computer diary, but I haven't made an entries in almost two weeks. I write down mostly what happens on a certain day and don't really keep track of what I felt or thought, since I feel that my emotions are too hard to be put into words. A while back I found a journal (with only about twenty entries) that I had kept back in elementary school and which I'd forgotten about, so it really nice to remember some the acitivities did. I drew some pretty awful pictures, too.

It was actually while I was reading Dracula now that my interest in diary writing was re-kindled. Reading how all the characters would write down occurences and thoughts, I thought it would also be cool to go back sometimes and see what you have written. And you never know it may coem in handy to know some of that stuff at a later stage. Well it helped John Seward and co....... ;)

I keep a sort of journal/diary. I don't write in it often, but I write in it when something important happens or there is something I'm thinking that I just have to write down. I also have two other journals, but one is for philosophy at school, and the other is a prayer journal.

I keep a notebook, that isn't technically a diary just... A notebook. I carry it with me everywhere, so that if anything pops up in my head while I'm out I can write it down. I've kept one since I was 9 (I wanted to be Harriet the Spy and a writer, like her) and simply can't go without it. I love having a single place where all my thoughts are kept, and I've got everything in there from 'I mailed my application today' to notes on the nature of infinity, reading notes and some really deep philosophical crap.
Sometimes I do wonder what people would think when they read them if something happened to me. Especially my mother. But I strictly told her not to read them--just burn them. I don't think I'd care much if anyone else reads them. :p

I do the same thing. Sometimes there's a ton of stuff I want to get down, and it's really complicated in my head, but then I end up having to pick and choose which thoughts to put down because once I'm writing the third sentence I'm already thinking about the 8th sentence, and when I read over what I wrote it sounds choppy and doesn't make sense, full of holes. That's is why I can write better on the computer, and where I write essays and the more complicated things, because I type a lot faster.

I've often wanted to do that...carry a littel notebook in my pocketbook, becasue by the time I go to bed at night I'm too tired to write down anything. So many thoughts and observations come into my mind all through the day that I'd like to remember. But then I think, "what if I lose this and a stranger reads it?" :o Ahk...I'm a prisoner of my fears! ;)

Just go for it, Liz. I carry my writing journal most places with me, and lately, been letting people read it (they've wanted to) even though there's some very personal stuff in there, if you know what you're looking for and how to read me. Kind of liberating to just let it all go free...
