Discuss the first season of House. Which is your favorute episode so far? Who is your favorite character? Do you think Dr. House and Dr. Cameron should get together? And anything else you'd like to talk about....but don't talk about Season 2 in this thread, as many people are still watching Season 1. There's a separate thread for Season 2. The 'House' That Laurie Built
By Michael O'Sullivan

Hugh Laurie, who can be heard on the big screen as the voice of Gutsy the pigeon in the feature-length kiddie cartoon "Valiant," is up for an Emmy Award this month for outstanding lead actor in a drama series. What's perhaps more interesting to note than the British-born, Cambridge-educated actor's nomination is the fact that the television series in which he stars, "House, M.D.," did not get a similar nod from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for outstanding drama series.
That isn't to say that the medical-mystery drama -- whose first season has just come out on DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and whose second season premieres Sept. 13 on Fox -- didn't deserve one. The show, each episode of which centers on the efforts of Laurie's Dr. Gregory House to diagnose a difficult medical condition, more than holds its own in a crowded field of "C.S.I."-style competitors. But what makes "House, M.D." unique, and propels the show forward, is Laurie's portrayal of the caustic, misanthropic, eye-rolling, pain-pill-popping and piano-playing medical genius who has been known to prescribe cigarettes to a patient suffering from inflammatory bowels.
Like other great TV eccentrics -- Tony Shalhoub's obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk comes most immediately to mind -- Laurie's performance goes way beyond mere shtick, with each episode peeling away a little more of House's anger to reveal his broken humanity, in a way that, say, Ted Danson's similar character on "Becker" never really did.
The three-disc, 22-episode set includes a handful of mostly lukewarm extras, in which the cast (which includes Omar Epps and Robert Sean Leonard) and crew (e.g., director-producer Bryan "X2" Singer) sing the show's praises. And although a tour of the set is nice, the place it's most tempting to go is inside the title character's head. But the question of what exactly makes House tick, and what is going to tick him off next, is the mystery that keeps "House, M.D." so haunting.

That is so true. Every week we do discover a little more about House, and each week Laurie reveals that little bit more beautifully. I think that there could be no one more deserving of that Emmy. (Though I don't really know who else is nominated.)
Well, having watched the episode last night, I am getting more and more excited about what is to come in the rest of series one. The episode aired in Australia last night was about the baseball player who had the drugs problem, though what I liked about this episode was that for once, instead of focussing more on the patient, we had a bit of relationship building and discovery about House himself. It was an excellent follow up to the episode in which House went without his pills.
As for series two, please don't talk too much about it, as here in Australia we are still in series one! At least mark the start of your posts with WARNING: SERIES TWO SPOILERS! :)

Yes, I really liek how the focus of the show has shifted from primarily being about the patients and their "mystery" illnesses, to House himself, and what we learn through his relationships. Laurie is fantastic, in that he can make the shift from caustic to fragile without making me want to throw up - instead, feeling his humanity. This is quite a feat!
I dug the last episode for another reason too - my brother has Addison's disease, so I have an idea of how hard it is to diagnose.
Bring on more House!

I went out yesterday and bought the series 1 DVD set. My arthritis was acting up all night, so I got to watch the first 4 episodes...I'm hooked! I've always loved Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster in the hilarious Jeeves and Wooster series (I own the whole DVD set), so I wasn't sure how I was going to take to him in this completely different role...and using an American accent, yet! He's such a fabulous actor, though, that I never once thought of Bertie Wooster, and I just love him as the most peculiar but strangely vulnerable Dr. House. I can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes over the weekend...I have to watch 12 more to complete series 1 before series 2 premiers on Tuesday evening.
Heh...when I saw this thread...I was thinking House, Maryland. ...and I thought....hmm...never heard of it. Then, when I learned it was a TV show, I thought...hmm...never heard of it. How come it's been on for a few seasons, and I've never heard of it?

So what's the latest episode that's aired in Australia?...because I've already watched the baseball player episode ans the addison's disease episode on my dvd set, and I've still got one more dvd to watch (on both sides). Is season 1 still running right now? Does this mean that I won't have anyone to discuss season 2 with (it starts on Tuesday here in the USA)? Oh, the cruel irony!

We are just about to see the one about Chase and his Dad. I know nothing else about it yet. We are so far behind...this time next year we'll be halfway through series two.
For some reason the Aussie TV stations didn't think that House would be successful, but it has really taken off here. After all, it's got Jesse Spencer in it, an Aussie through and through and former heart throb of Neighbours. The concept is also really good - so sick of CSI - something a bit different. I wasn't going to miss it. However, the newspapers and TV stations still can't understand how it has been so successful. They are very confused. :D

Lots of Chase, House meddling in Chase's life, Wilson flirting again, Foreman sinking to the background, and shocking revelations about Chase and his dad... :o ! House knows something Chase doesn't know...
I can't believe you missed it. You will be able to catch up, I suppose, but if a certain event takes place than you may be a little confused. Can you possibly get a hold of it?
It was a good episode. Not as good as the one where he stopped taking drugs, but focussing even more on the relationships now.
We're just over halfway there now, I think!

Sorry, Star, I intended to tell you what happened before this week's episode, but it didn't happen. Basically, Chase's dad left Chase and his mother when his mother was dying. Chase couldn't forgive him, and the reason he came back was because he has cancer and wanted to mend things with Chase. Chase eventually saw him and began to talk to him again. I don't think anything else of great importance happened.
Did you see last night's episode? Do you think that House and Cameron are going to get together?

Of possible importance in a future episode (no, that's not a spoiler...it hasn't come up in another episode so far) is that the elder Dr. Chase revealed to Dr. House that he is in the final stages of cancer. Dr. House intended to tell young Dr. Chase about this against the wishes of old Dr. Chase, but changed his mind. The young Dr. Chase decided at the last minute to see his father, and met him as he was on his way to the airport to leave for Australia. They embraced. Young Dr. Chase said he would try to visit Australia in the next year. This was very poignant since the old Dr. Chase will be dead by then, however old Dr. Chase still doesn't reveal his cancer to his son. Young Dr. Chase still has no idea that his father is dying.

Having watched only couple of episodes, I will drop my half a cent too.
I like the show. I like the cast. I like the fact that they are dealing with unusual illnesses. However, I think Laurie is a little over doing it. He needs to relax a little more. Maybe he will feel more at home next season.

I thinki t's central to the show that House is very un-relaxed person. In the beginning of the first season you know very little about Dr. House. Without spoiling anything for you folks who are behind the USA epsisode-wise, several reasons why House is the way he is will be revealed. I don't think I'd enjoy a relaxed House, myself. If he gets too comfortable or "at home," he'll just be another run-of-the-mill character like all the other detectives or doctors on other programs. I do think you have to watch more than one or two episodes to appreciate (or not appreciate) the show, and those should viewed in some degree of chronological order, becasue even though the cases are always new there is a definite, sometimes subtle, progression in character development from one episode to the next.

Yes, I am very disappointed he didn't win the Emmy. Have I mentioned House is the only TV I watch? :p
I definitely saw last night's episode...and I can't say I can see anything happening between House and Cameron. It's possible, and I can see why, but....it just doesn't seem right. But then again, House was a very naughty boy, wasn't he? His decision to lie to the transplant board had me on the edge of my seat. However, I didn't believe him at all when he told Cameron he didn't like her. It hurt to hear it, that's for sure.

How do you feel about his American accent? A British viewer on an R.E.M. forum I visit can't get used to hearing it. I've heard Hugh Laurie's extremely British accent from watching and loving him as Bertie Wooster in the Jeeves and Wooster British series, and before I saw the show I wondered how he was going to pull off an American accent. As an American I must say that his accent is seemless... I completely forget that he's British. :)

I think Cameron has a bit of a thing for House, but I doubt that it will be acted upon. I was quite upset when House said that he didn't like her, but we all know that he is lying. It is not possible that he dislikes everyone!

I was wondering that myself, as this seemed to be an episode where the emphasis was so much more clearly placed on the personal relationships of the characters, rather than the balance that is usually found between this and the case they are investigating. All he did was get her to tell him she wanted to live...perhaps a comparison can be found in the way House sabotages himself, and the relationship this bears to his desire to live...I don't know, I'm just wondering.

I have been watching it when I can, Tari, but I've missed at least two episodes (would have been only one of they hadn't decided to show an episode last Thursday. Grrr!). The last episode I caught was the one where House had to decide whether or not to give that speech. So, has Cameron left, because that bit confused me. I'm sure I've missed so many important bits, but I do still feel that anything between House and Cameron is doomed, and I also have the feeling that things can't stay as they are between House, Cutty and Vogler. One of them must go, and it won't be House.
Thoughts, Tari? Anything really important I've missed?

I'm ambivilent about this episode. I didn't particularly like the way they presented the facts behind House's limp, etc... I found it to be the most boring episode presentation-wise, although the facts were defiintely the most important. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had been presented in the usual format, as a "present the case/solve the case" episode as they usually do, but this time with House as the patient...a flash-back without the lecture bit. And I remember still wondering after this epsisode: "Does he still care about Stacey? How much? Does Cameron still have a chance? (Who are you rooting for? I was rooting for Cameron. :) )

Sooo rooting for Cameron.
I thought the presentation of the episode was a nice break from the usual format. I particularly liked the way Chase, Foreman, Cameron and Wilson came in throughout and commented on the lesson. It was good to see it told through House's eyes, in the way he would present it to a stranger.
On another note, the DVD set for season 1 is coming out in a week. I hope it doesn't cost too much, I'm on a budget!
And I missed Hugh Laurie on Parkinson yesterday. :(

I loved this episode. It was great - and it was possibly the only way we could learn all the facts about House's leg - by him presenting it as a diagnostic/treatment challenge, to seemingly impartial third parties.
The final episode was alos well written, and now we know there'll definitely be some interesting developments.

I'm ambivilent about this episode. I didn't particularly like the way they presented the facts behind House's limp, etc... I found it to be the most boring episode presentation-wise, although the facts were defiintely the most important. I liked this episode, I thought it was an interesting way of presenting House's history. I don't think I would have liked it as much if it was done in the more straight forward format.
I seem to be in the minority, I am rooting for Stacey. I can't stand Cameron and I think she is all wrong for House.

I'm not a Cameron supporter at all - she's all about good intentions, and well, if wishes were horses... I think House certainly had a point with what he said on their date - although he was of course harsher in his delivery than he needed to be. Stacey is not close to my heart either. She's no good for House, more to the point, he does need to move on from her. Easy enough to say, hey?
