No radio or tv station will play him but I think he's one of the best British artist for the past 30 or so years, definitely up there with the Clash and Morrissey/The Smiths

My husband Madshas an album by Billy Bragg and Wilco called Mermaid Avenue, or something like that. Mads is a big Wilco fan.

I haven't heard much by him, but I saw the tail end of his set at the London Fleadh last summer, and thought he was certainly an excellent live performer. I wouldn't necessarily assume he'd be as good recorded, but I'd certainly like to hear more of him.

My favourite of his albums is Talking With the Taxman About Poetry.

I saw him in concert once several years ago. The whole show was just him and a guitar--no band. It was really good. He's actually quite funny too.

Talking with the taxman about poetry - hell of an album and a hell of a song.....I would have loved to have been able to go and see him.

this is an example of great Billy Bragg lyrics:

The Price Of Oil

Voices on the radio
tell us that we’re going to war
those brave men and women in uniform
they want to know what they’re fighting for.

The generals want to hear the end game
the allies won’t approve the plan
but the oil men in the white house
they just don’t give a damn.

It’s all about the price of oil
it’s all about the price of oil
don’t give me no shit
about blood, sweat, tears and toil
it’s all about the price of oil

Now I ain’t no fan of Saddam Hussein
oh, please don’t get me wrong
if it’s freeing the Iraqi people you’re after
then why have we waited so long.

Why didn’t we sort this out last time
was he less evil than he is now
the stock market holds the answer
to why him, why here, why now.

Saddam killed his own people
just like general Pinochet
and once upon a time both these evil men
were supported by the U.S.A.

And whisper it, even Bin Laden
once drank from America’s cup
just like that election down in Florida
this shit doesn’t all add up.

It’s all about the price of oil
‘cause it’s all about the price of oil
don’t give me no shit
about blood, sweat, tears and toil
it’s all about the price of oil.

Music and lyrics by Billy Bragg, 2002.
Produced by Billy Bragg and Simon Edwards

A big Billy Bragg fan here. Got Mermaid Avenue too, but my favourite is a compilation CD called Victim of Geography that contains ALL 23 songs (74 minutes) from BOTH Talking With the Taxman About Poetry AND Workers Playtime. :)
