A group of conservation photographers selected their version of "The Top 40 Nature Photographs" ranging over the past century or so, though heavily weighted to more recent decades. Some photos seem to have been chosen for their historical/political value. But regardless of how you feel about conservation, some of these photos are just beautiful. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilcptop40/sets/72157623774840478/
I primarily prefer the ones that don't have animals in them. Except this elephant one really captured me. I saw it in another article, and was expecting the rest of the group of photos to be this good, but they aren't.

Some of those pictures are amazing and I definitely see why they would be highlighted out of all the photos to choose from (like Earthrise!), many I wouldn't necessarily say are "the best" but they are very cool pictures (the one with the sea lion eating the chick, or the lion walking into the dust storm), but others I just don't see why they were selected, especially given the competition.
Thanks for sharing these pictures! I love looking at photos like this. I have a bunch saved on my computer that I think hold their own with a lot of these. I'll post them later as I have to go out now. Here's one for now, it's a big bird!:

Yes, these ones are very much in the same vein as the others, and many are better. I'm not sure what kind of selection was used, especially since a large proportion of the photos are by the same photographers. It seems that perhaps they weren't looking at a very wide selection to begin with. Or perhaps because they are auctioning off some of the photos, they mostly chose ones they'd have permission to auction. Just a guess.
Yeah, I thought that lion in the dust storm photo was pretty neat too.
Of the ones you posted, I really like the fire one. And also the last one right above and "Glen Canyon Revealed" - that is really amazing, I want to go there!
I didn't even notice a lot were the same photographer. It doesn't matter to me much though. I just like looking at the impressive pictures. :)
