i always mix up am and pm… which one is in the evening/night? and why don´t you use 1 und 13 instead of 1 pm/am?!?
Matthew Sweet

An ace is someone who shot down five enemy planes! It's derived from French referring to the A playing card.
AM has Ante, PM Post in it ... first is before, latter is after 12 ;)
The European 24 hrs system where 3pm is 15:00 is much easier.
marie
06-02-2004, 08:21 AM
oh I understand "post" and "ante" (you´ve to get a latin certificate to get the permission to study history in germany) but - I don´t know - I will never get this am/pm - thing…

I used to  (when I was about 3) but I don't any more.
Do you think You should be able to attack people who break into your house?
Most definitely, considering it's your private property. In southern Florida (where I'm from), before residential communities were popping up everywhere, it was common to see a tresspassing sign in the yard (some were just warning you that was private property; some actually warned that you will get shot if you trespass).

Do you think I'm stupid to be staring into the computer screen and listening to Pearl Jam when I have this headache? (Be honest, now....I can take it. )
Well, as long as the computer screen isn't flickering so much that you can notice it, then no, I don't think you're stupid for looking at the computer screen. As far as Pearl Jam goes, I'm going to say no to that one too. Music can be very relaxing for some, and if Pearl Jam is it, then crank it up! :)
While we're on that topic, is it the music or the lyrics that make a song good? [And if you can, give me an example 8)].
oceanflower
08-12-2004, 05:38 AM
Hmmm...I'd have to say the two are inseperable. For instance, with Pearl Jam, the lyrics are for the most part cryptic, but the music provides the interpretation. In other words, one can hear the meaning of the words in the music.
Does that make any sense?
Good answer. Definitely makes sense. There are parts of some songs where I have a "lyrics" moment or a "music" moment though.
I haven't noticed before, but is your avatar from Pearl Jam's Yield CD? In particular, "Given to Fly"?
For now, I'm off to bed. Thanks for chatting tonight. :D

Yep, You're right! :) (Nighty-night!)
Who's the nicest person you know?
Yep, You're right! :) (Nighty-night!)
Who's the nicest person you know?
Even though she drives me nuts sometimes, the nicest and most selfless person in the world is my mother. I'd like to reciprocate that question back to you.
What motivates you?
oceanflower
08-13-2004, 05:31 AM
(the nicest person I know is my dad. and for the same reason you say about your mom: he's selfless. He's also very friendly and non-judgemental.)
What motiovates me? I guess I'd have to say that love motivates me. Sounds corny, but when I think of why I do most things I do, it's because I'm caring about someone.
oceanflower
08-13-2004, 05:36 AM
Oops...I forgot to ask a question. :D
Who has had the biggest positive influence on your life?
(the nicest person I know is my dad. and for the same reason you say about your mom: he's selfless. He's also very friendly and non-judgemental.)
What motiovates me? I guess I'd have to say that love motivates me. Sounds corny, but when I think of why I do most things I do, it's because I'm caring about someone.
And that motivation from love sounds like it makes you a very selfless person as well. Doing something for others. Like donating blood.
Biggest positive influence? That's a stumper....
Could it be the text from a book? A quotation I mentioned from the book Foe in another thread has had a positive influence on me...always reminds me not to speak for others. Which is hard to do. Somebody says something, and naturally, you like to "translate" it into your own words/experience, when it might not necessarily be the same thing.
Could it be a dead person? Definitely Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Passive Resistance teaches me not to get upset.
Living person? I don't want to admit it, but I'd have to put the vote in for my mother again. I tell myself that I'm nothing like her, and in many ways I am not, but at the same time, she has had a tremendous positive influence on my life?
Since I went off on another tangent, my question is this: If you could meet any person, living or dead, who would it be? [and if you like, a brief reason why].
oceanflower
08-13-2004, 06:06 AM
The first person that popped into my mind is the Dalai Lama. I'd like to ask him how to be peaceful in an unpeaceful world. I'd also like to meet Mother Theresa, because she was the embodiment of selfless love.
What goal(s) in life do you pursue?
Right now, my goals are to find a job! I took the weekend off and did a lot of reading (and watched the Olympics), but toorrow, I'm really going to hit the job search hard again!
Have you been watching much of the Olympics this weekend?
oceanflower
08-16-2004, 06:27 AM
No, very little.
What is your favorite season of the year?
It's a tough call between autumn and spring. Both aren't too hot, and not freezing cold. In the end, I choose fall..er, autumn. Great weather for pants of shorts.
Anyone know why fall/autumn is the only season that can referred to by different names? Now I have something to go searching on the internet for.
oceanflower
08-17-2004, 04:09 AM
I'm going to guess ('cause I'm feeling too lazy to research it) that "fall" is just a "pet name" for autumn, and that "fall" refers to the falling leaves.
Would you rather swim in the ocean or ski in the mountains?
Ski in the mountains! Every winter (for the past two winters, I should say), I have gone with some friends to Wisp, in West West Maryland. I've probably lost some appreciation swimming in the ocean because I live in Virginia Beach and the ocean is at my feet.
If you had a million dollars, how do you think you would spend it?
starrynights48
08-17-2004, 01:21 PM
I'd buy a house (complete with lush furnishings!), a new car, and some pets. A whole new wardrobe. Dump some in savings, do some traveling, live a little.
Anyway.
What's your favorite type of pet? Cat, dog, bird, etc?
mazarane
08-17-2004, 08:00 PM
humans make good pets
what's your favourite kind of landscape?
Moonlight
08-17-2004, 10:37 PM
lush, green meadows with tons of brightly colored wildflowers and maybe a huge oak tree with low gnarled branches that you could climb :D
What's better: Captain Crunch or Cocoa Puffs?
Captain Crunch!
Would you agree or disagree? 8)
mazarane
08-18-2004, 11:54 AM
I almost never agree
With respect to the cereals, I have never heard of either, but I'd go for Captain Crunch- I'm pretty sure I wouldn't think much of Cocoa Puffs; and 'Crunch' might have potential.
Can you tell the difference between UHT (long-life) and normal milk (or fresh-from the cow milk, come to that)?
Moonlight
08-19-2004, 12:47 AM
I hate milk. It's skanky tasting. The only kind I like is this stuff called Promised Land milk. It comes in glass bottles and it tastes like milkshakes cause it's really thick and sweet. I only drink the chocolate kind though, and not very often.
If you were to write a book what type would it be? (biography, autobiography, fiction, political, a book of poems, etc.)

Do you enjoy a day when it rains?
Not lately. All the rain here in Virginia Beach is messing up all the hard work I'm doing with the pool. It's messing up the chemical balance! :x And even when I'm not doing the pool, rainy days smell like worms. I do like thunderstorms though...

Forum clock live? Is the forum clock alive? Heh Heh. It lives in GMT time zone if that's what your talking about. If your talking about where the clock script is, as in where is the site phyically it's in either Atlanta, Georgia or somewhere in California. I'm not sure 100%.
Can you write a paragraph in Terry Prachet style about the forum clock personifing it, and if so, can you write the paragraph here?
mazarane

This is where the forum clock maintains its rule. It is rare for such a thing to exist without belief, but the clock survives on the technicality known as Murphy's Law. If you are the only person on the board, time will pass slowly. If it is packed, you will be unable to keep up. And strange variations in time can play havoc with touch-typing. In such a way an unregarded clock can maintain life. Outside, the small gods blow and tumble in the wind.....
Could you next write a paragraph in the style of your chosen author continuing the story of the forum clock?

Moonlight

I have nine. Three dogs (a chocolate lab named Jingle, a pomeranian named Boo-boo Honey, and a shitzu that was supposed to be named Rolie but everyone calls him the baby), two cats in the house(Trinity and Tinker), a guinea pig named Elektra, a bird named Tweety, and two cats that live outside named Demon and Brigit. I still crave a tarantula and a goldfish.
If you had a goldfish, what would you name it?
You have a lot of pets... Not a bad thing though. Pets are great companions! And it looks like your craving for a Goldfish is almost ended?
I would name it Cleo [from Pinocchio].

Artist as in painter/drawer or artist as in any form of art including literature?
If you mean painter/drawer I don't have one. Why? Because we haven't had any art-history lessons in art classes at school. I like the person who makes those drawings where stairs in a square all look like they are going upwards, Dali or someone I think.
Would you prefer to live now, 1000 years ago or 1000 years in the future?

Absolutely. Though...I don't think there's anybody that I hate. Hate is a pretty strong word. Either I get to know that particular person, in which case I can't say I hate them, because obviously I have some interest in them. Or..I don't give them a fair chance...and then how can I say I hate that person if I haven't given them a fair shot at friendship?

I cannot mention the name I hate most. Why? Because it was the name I was given at birth, the name I grew up with, the name that never fit and felt like an itchy sweater on me all of the time.
Well, I finally legally changed it. Out with the old. Believe it or not, my name is truly and legally Rain. I love my name now. I am Rain. That is me. I was never that other name.
So I cannot mention the name. I cannot bring myself to say it aloud or even type it for I hate it that much. I will never tell it. Maybe if you email me and ask nicely and swear you will never repeat it, say it aloud or type it, I will give you a hint as to what it is, but maybe, even then, I won't.

What was your favourite book as a little kid?
Moonlight

Not my question:
Have you ever read Jean Plaidy carpricorn? She writes historical fiction mainly in Anne's time period, and mostly on Henry VIII's wives. The Lady in the Tower is Anne's story, and The Rose Without a Thorn is her cousin Catherine's. Phillipa Gregory wrote a book called The Other Boleyn Girl about Mary Boleyn's affair with Henry VIII shortly before Anne married him. It was over 600 pages long, but very simple words, so it was easy to read.
To answer your question: My favorite book was The Diggingest Dog.
What is your favorite pass-time (besides reading)?

Generally, yes! In a nightclub I need a bit to drink first and then definitely yes! Otherwise, the only one I'm vaguely confident at is the waltz, but I'll give cha, jive or quickstep a go...
what's your favourite dance?

Yes I have read some of Jean Plaidy's books and I enjoyed The Lady in the Tower. I'd be interested in reading The Rose Without a Thorn because I've heard of Catherine and also The Other Boleyn Girl seems like an interesting read. The one wife I have no interest in reading about is Jane Seymour, not quite sure why maybe because she came right after my favourite Anne Boleyn and replaced her... :?
Now to finally answer the question :D - Square Dancing is a type of folk dance- An American country dance in which set of 4 couples form squares- very vibrant and exciting :)
Which fictional character do you feel you can relate to most?
Moonlight
10-11-2004, 10:44 PM
That is an extremly hard question. I relate to many different charcters for different reasons...A lot of the characters I relate to I'm not very fond of... I would have to say the main character of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. She's around my age, has many similar character traits... Through the whole story I just felt oddly connected to her.

I like to shop...but I'm not crazy about grocery shopping.
To elaborate on the square-dancing defintion:
Square-dancing is an American traditional country dance. Nowadays the dances are held in barns, or the room is decorated like a barn for atmosphere...you can dress up in overalls or country-style skirts and blouses i f you want to...put on a straw hat or cowboy hat if you want to. Everyone forms up into "squares" of four people...two guys and two gals. The fiddler begins to play some upbeat country music, and the caller begins to call out instructions in time with the music, such as "bow to the lady on your right" or "grab your partner and dosi-do" ..there's a million different calls he can make, and everyone does what he says. A good caller knows which steps to put together to make a really good dance, and the participants know all of the jargon he uses. If you don't understand what "allemande left with a left allemande" means, then you'll screw up the square. The caller can even have all of the squares of people dancing as a whole, then get them back into their individual squares. It's realy a lot of fun.
So here's my question: Does any of that make sense?

When you are in an elevator ("lift" ) with a stranger, do you stare straight ahead and say nothing, or do you say something to break the silence?
Moonlight
10-21-2004, 11:47 PM
I'm a very friendly person, and I'm from the South (everyone here says hello even if you're a stranger, only tourists are rude enough not to say hey back), so I always say hello and start a conversation. Unless of course they look terribly upset and like they don't want to be bothered.
