When reading a newspaper I found at the hospital a few nights ago, I saw soemthing that really interests me. It's called Second Life. It seems like some kind of virtual interaction thingy, where you have an avatar that you can buy clothes and things for. I don't know much more about it, but I just found the site for it tonight since I had a few extra minutes:

Virtual Worlds, Avatars, free 3D chat, online meetings - Second Life Official Site (http://secondlife.com/?lang=en-US)

A 3D virtual world community. I wonder if it's kind of like a video game, where you can interact with others. From the article I remember, such things bring in big money.

Here is the Wiki on it:

Second Life (SL) is a virtual world developed by Linden Lab that launched on June 23, 2003 and is accessible via the Internet. A free client program called the Second Life Viewer[1] enables its users, called Residents, to interact with each other through avatars. Residents can explore, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another, or travel throughout the world (which residents refer to as "the grid"). Second Life is for people aged 18 and over, while Teen Second Life is for people aged 13 to 17.

I already fantasize about some of us literaturejunction members getting into this community and meeting each other, it sounds like it can be a hell of a lot of fun! We can all sit and read together, yay! ;) But, I need to spend less time online, not more!!!

ANyone participate in this, know anything about it, ever hear of it?

I'm nearly certain I've mentioned Second Life on here before, but I can't seem to find it on a search.

In any case, yes, I've heard of Second Life and I tried to use it once but found it difficult to use and navigate and not as fun as making a virtual person in the Sims or something. It seems to take a while to get used to using it, and I didn't have the patience. Also, the Second Life world is entirely enormous and it seems like if you were in a less-trafficked area or didn't know where you were going, you could wander around forever and never see anyone or anything else.

There are people in the English department at _object's university who are very involved in Second Life, so I mostly know about it through some presentations they've done. I know, for example, that there is a virtual Globe Theater that puts on Shakespearean plays entirely within second life and you can see them from within Second Life.

Also, some universities have lectures or meetings via Second Life. And I'm also familiar with the way that artists make virtual galleries to display their art.

All pretty interesting, but as I said I had a lot of trouble using it and was kinda turned off after that. But I did enjoy watching presentations about it from people who were much more adept at using it - they can do lots of cool things (the guy had made wings for his second life persona and was able to fly!)

Hi there margaine! :)

Oh my! All that you can do! That's so cool! I'd find people who'd want to act out Ibsen plays or better yet Maeterlink's Monna Vanna or Cyrano de Bergerac and the like. But if it is hard for you to use, I doubt I'd have much success at first, but also I'd like to curb my online time, as always. Thanks margaine. This interests me because of all the technology, with virtual worlds, v-girls, and the like, because such things can be put to use when robots become more and more advanced, software and applications are what are the important focus. But I have to go to work, so I can edit or expand this comment! So take it as is.

I think on the American version of The Office, Jim goes on this site to keep tabs on Dwight who is severly depressed.
