I just came back from seeing Taking Lives. I waited for the dollar theatre and am glad that I did. Still it had its moments of sheer suspense. And Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke, and Kiefer Sutherland all combine to make wonderful eye candy.

I saw an IMAX (3D film thing) last week- more of a showcase for the technology than a movie though (there were only 2 available!), but it had some very cool sequences.

Before that the last one was "The Last Samurai" a couple of months back...I found it surprisingly good! :D

Most recent film I've seen is Troy. I have a different opinion--great CGI, big name actors, but poor production value. Like the money got spent on the first two.... Reminded me of the miniseries Masala (which starred Peter O'Toole coincindentally).

actors:
Achilles - Brad Pitt
Priam - Peter O'Toole
Paris - Orlando Bloom
Hector - Eric Bana
Odysseus - Sean Bean

Don't remember the other names off hand.

I just watched an old english movie called hte Red Shoes, nobdy famous in it, alot of ballet and overacting, but most of the poeple looked like they were just dancers so it was forgivable. It was made during the beginning of the technicolor phenomena so it is a little funnily coloured, but intersting for late night entertainment to put you to sleep.

How about that scene in Pulp fiction where she overdoses and has a huge needle stuck in her chest. Brilliant is the only word for it Freaky Ed, though I wonder what the actress thought when they told her what was to happen in that scene, a needle that big, even if it's not really going to be shoved into your heart has to be slightly alarming in some fashion.

My boyfriend said "Dodgeball" is just like "Zoolander." It was entertaining enough but at least I didn't pay for it!

"Spider-Man 2" was so much better than the first one, although Kirsten Dunst had the personality of a crack whore. Where oh where did her personality go??

I don't scare easily but "The Ring" freaked me out. We rented it and right after it ended, the people I was watching it with went out to smoke, and I scurried after them because being left alone didn't sound like a very good idea.

I look forward to "Two Brothers," though, and "Anchorman," the movies planned for this weekend's viewing pleasure.

MJ seemed like she was on about a million different tranqulizers and waiting for the needle to be passed. She had a few decent scenes but for the most part, I found her nothing like her comic book counterpart.

Speaking of which, she actually has her own comic book now. It's made for teenagers and, after reading the first issue, is decidedly lame unless you are a considerably younger person who enjoys cheesy teenage drama.

Good film, made you think and that was its purpose.

In terms of the cinema quality and not the politics, it wasn't as good as Bowling For Columbine.

I heard that if you don't know the historical 'bases' of the film, you're sure to be way too confused to enjoy it, and if you do know some of the background info, any of it at all is sufficient to ensure you're frustrated with the ridiculousness of their portrayal of the myth (Flemish armor centuries before it appeared, and Lancelot not being French anymore, and suchlike).

But that was a rather critical friend of mine; i haven't seen it, myself. Obviously, it can't be terrible if you enjoyed it --what did you like about the film?

Well, I didn't know too much about the origins of King Arthur besides the run-of-the-mill Arthurian legends and I managed just fine. The minor inconsistencies were more or less goofs on the filmmaker's behalf. For example (and a co-worker told me this), the falcon in the movie is actually only found in Arizona. Little bits like that that, in my opinion, didn't ruin the movie.

I liked how true-to-life it felt. The last Arthurian movie that I remember is First Knight. You know, with Richard Gere and Sean Connery. The epitome of cheese, though thoroughly enjoyable. However, I've since learned a lot about the period and King Arthur showed him in a different light, working under more realistic conditions with more realistic characters.

The only thing that I didn't like was how Lord of the Rings it felt towards at times.

anchorman is to american humor what monty python is to british humor....at least in my opinion

I was so amazed when I first saw it that I decided to make a copy for myself. I took my Wizard of Oz DVD, took out the sound, and added the music from Dark Side of the Moon. Presto! Now, for anyone that wants to see it, they don't have to sync it just right. :)

I probably should have said so in my previous post, but Meshes of the Afternoon isn't really a movie. It's actually an experimental film. I don't know if anyone that visited the site noticed, but it's only 14 minutes long. Still, it's incredible to watch and learn how much of an impact such a short film had on movies in general. I guess that really depends on what your preference of genre is. Personally, I liked the book much better; it was darker and was better developed, though admittedly slow at some points. So, based on that, I'd also say that the original movie was better than the re-release but not as good as the book.

I have respect for DiCaprio for that movies, he was brilliant. and the thing about "girbert grape" is that I love that sad atmosphere the movie has. somehow it makes you feel sad too while you're waching it.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape is the first movie that i noticed how good an actor Leo DiCaprio is. i thought he did well in The Basketball Diaries too.

but to stay on topic, i saw A Shark's Tale last night. it was alright, i liked picking out the movies that they took lines from, but there was something missing. i don't know really, but it just didn't do it for me.

as for my all time favorite movie...The Princess Bride! action, romance, drama, and comedy...what more can one ask for. ican watch that movie over and over and over. good times, good times.

I haven't read the book, but I loved the movie. It's gruesome in some parts, but there are some beautiful people in it who can actually ACT! Which is hard to come by in my opinion. . . . and of course the story is great, but this is coming from someone who hasn't read the book. I'll have to read it, and compare. You might see it and think hey. . . . what happened to that one scene?

It's actually one in a series of books by Anne Rice called the Vampire Chronicles. It begins with Interview With the Vanpire, which I really loved. The rest of the series is great, including Queen of the Damned.

I read the first three books of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Interveiw with a Vampire was my favorite (and *that* movie is amazing!) IMO, I liked the Mayfair Trilogy much better.

Of course, the book Queen of the Damned is of more worth than the movie. ;) But Stuart Townsend was great (and gorgeous!) in the movie, as was Aaliyah. I was dissapointed they cut out the story of the Twins, but like they said in one of the extras on the DVD, that is a complete movie unto itself. I was also dissapointed that they didn't bring back characters from the other books, like Louis and Armand (although I suppose Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas were unavailable. Darn! lol). The movie was good to rent though, but I don't know if I would want to buy it or something though.

What was the last movie I saw? I watched some of Mrs. Doubtfire on TV the other night when it was on, but not the whole thing. That movie is classic! Gotta love Robin Williams!

I love the movie as well as the book. Amongst my friends and I, the movie has a bit of a cult following. I watch it now, and it seems odd that it should be a movie shown to children (I know, it is a kid's movie), because it has such a mix of craziness, sadness and some terrifying things. I don't think the remake will be as good as the original, but I always say that.

Yeah, I read the book a few months ago, when I was catching up on some "modern classics" I missed in high school. Although I do remember being disturbed by it, and if my memory is at all correct, that was the idea.

Capricorngurl: I just saw Napolean Dynamite a week or so ago and thought it was *hilarious*! OMG, so much great stuff in there! No plot nor substance whatsoever, but the randominity and far-outness of the whole thing was just absolutely delightful! lol. I suppose it helped that I saw it late at night with a close friend... we are still quoting the movie! ("So, what are you going to do today?" "Whatever I want to, GOSH! What do you think!?" hahahahaha!!!! So great!)

I saw Closer last week and it was HORRIBLE! I went on a double date and went in thinking "This is going to be so great and artsy and inspiring!" It s-u-c-k-e-d sucked! The actors were fairly good, but the whole premise and writing and plot was just plain bad. Sorry. And I was sitting there watching it thinking "Well... maybe this IS brilliant and I just don't get it..." but no, it really was that bad. We were laughing and making silly comments the whole time; it got to the point where the people behind us were laughing too. [:D]

I also saw Finding Neverland recently. THAT was a *fantastic* movie. Seriously, it was completely amazing. Has anyone else seen this? Johnny Depp... he's incredible; I can find no fault in anything he does. And this movie was just fabulous, no lie. I can't find a thing bad to say about the entire thing. I cried. The book is interesting, and definitely not like the Disney children's movie, nor like Hook, the movie starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. Of course, it could also be because I saw both a long time ago and didn't pick up on everything I am reading in the book now.

NaderiaBonita: I suppose Napolean Dynamite is all right just I expected more I guess. I saw it with my boyfriend and some friends, it was fun to hang out and stuff with them, but none-the-less my two close friends and I still find it was not that great. I have my weak moments. They are my society, so they are part of my own weakness. A good point to make is that I enjoyed the Ocean's movies so much more once I recognized them for what they are. They say a lot more about modern culture than most movies, if only as an example.

It's not really a holiday in the sense that Christmas is a holiday. It's just a day with a special name. Like Valentine's Day, or Halloween. Many people recognize it, but it's not a holiday in the sense that you get it off from work.

So what do you do on Groundhog day? Besides watching Groundhog day?

I didn't know that groundhog day really exists, I thought it was just the movie. Nevermind, as far as I can see it's not a very special day, except for Jackie. ;)

I watched the first half of Bowling for Columbine today. Then all the others returned and we watched something else on tv.

what is bowling for columbine? is it about the shooting?

skye
02-11-2005, 08:19 AM
Also about the shooting. But it also shows some other people and organisations who have guns at home (Michigan militia or something like that and a guy who might have been connected to the bombing in Oklahoma city, but there was no evidence against him). There are also 911 recordings from Columbine and interviews with very different people - ex-students of Columbine, one of the author's of South Park (he also went to Columbine), Marilyn Manson - some people blamed him for the shooting. It also shows the factory where they produce guns in Littleton which is not so far away from Columbine - Martin Lokheed or something like that. And lots of other things.

So there are a lot of different things in this movie. But they all show how easy it is to get a gun in America and that's why there's so much violence - at least that's how I understood it.

Sis, What is this film? As a big Fallafel consumer I find this interesting (Although I doubt it's about Fallafel:) )

Its an Australian movie with Noah Taylor as the main character. Its about a writer, all of the strange share houses he has lived in all over the country in relative povery, and his battle to write something decent - or at least something that will allow him to pay all of his debts. Its very clever - originally a book by I don't know who, and funny. Its not about fallafels - but it does feature one, as the title probably gives away...

Saw "Million Dollar Baby" yesterday. Okay but a little shallow in places. Not what I expected, which was a good thing. Some standout scenes. "Mystic River" was definitely better, though...

Mads and I rented it a while back. I wasn't impressed...I found the plot to be too contrived. Mads liked it more than I did, but neither of us gave it rave reviews. It was entertaining enough, though, so it's probably worth renting.

In the last two days, I've seen Haunted and The Turn of the Screw, both ghost movies. The Turn of the Screw was strange but still quite good, by the standards of ghost movies, anyway.

Actually, Henri James did not make it clear that The Turn of the Screw was a ghost story and that is the beauty of it.
The Others was quite good and Nicole Kidman quite credible in the part...

By the way, was it the remake of Haunted ? If it is you definitely have to see the original, by Robert Wise, I think, black and white movie. Much, much better . No comparison. A real classic.

Yes, it was the remake of Haunted, and quite ordinary - although the costuming made it a worthwhile watch for me (one of my foibles). I'll have to hunt down the original - I love old movies.

I agree, The Others was quite a good movie. I was also quite surprised by the ending of The Turn of the Screw, and I did quite like the ambiguity, it made it an even stranger experience.

The Bad Seed - a very good movie from the '50s, adapted from the Broadway play. A story about a sweet, pretty little girl who kills people to get what she wants. Not a thriller, but a study of a sociopathic mind. Ahead of it's time, it's become somewhat of a cult classic.

Ah yes, now that someone tells me which scene it is in, I remember. But it's hardly a lizard/iguana that appears in the movie...not a real one at least. Just a backdrop.
