Here's a list from the magazine, Mother Jones, of some intriguing non-fiction reads:

http://motherjones.com/media/2011/12/best-books-year

These books appear to run the gamut; titles range from Eating Mud Crabs in Kandahar to Dog, Inc.: The Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Man's Best Friend.to Blue Nights by Joan Didion. The list doesn't even stay tightly in non-fiction - a collection of short stories is also recommended - I'm With the Bears: Short Stories from a Damaged Planet.

Wondering if others have read anything this year, non-fiction, that knocked your socks off?

The rainforests are deteriorating rapidly. Species are being lost together with the forest, and in the plant sphere, we are exterminating potential medicinal jewels that we haven't even researched. Hope people pay more attention to this ecological matters because the damage might be irreversible for a large percentage of the earth, since the rainforests are a large influence in all kinds of ecosystems that work in parallell yet well connected as to causation.
